Scientific research doesn't always take place in a lab, and it certainly doesn't always go to plan! Fieldwork is when scientists study phenomena, organisms, cultures, etc. in their natural environments. For example, biologists interested in studying the size, behaviors, or interactions of organisms often have to go out into the natural habitats where the organisms they are studying live. Other scientists who study glaciers, volcanoes, fossils, cultures, ancient civilizations, and much more also have to go out into the "field" to complete their research. This work is certainly exciting, but it isn't always easy, and sometimes the scientists can find themselves in sticky situations (literally)!
Part 1: Learning about Fieldwork
Use the readings below to learn more about types of fieldwork, and the experiences of various scientists.
Part 2: Creative Challenge
Use the "Fieldwork Fails" link to see examples of times that things didn't quite go according to plan for scientists. Then, think of a time you tried something new (whether it was a science experiment, or you were practicing a new skill), and create your own illustration of your "fieldwork fail." Try to get your friends and/or family involved, and create your own little book or blog of adventures that went wrong!
